Over 200 spectators cheered on 8 amazing female competitors at the Westside Recreation Centre park, and the skill level was the highest ever in the history of the event - these ladies keep getting better and better!

Bgirls Leslie Quik, Rhemix, Estaria, Mission and Mel brought on their best moves despite the 32 degree heat, and MC Politique Queen performed some sick rhymes for the crowd while DJ MollyFi spun an intense set of hip hop and funk.

The event was featured on the front page of 24 magazine (with Tenia Lasaga busting a kick flip while smiling for the camera!) as well as on Telus TV.

CONGRATULATIONS go to Laura Sliva, first place winner in the 18+ category for the second year in a row, and to Kassy Bailey who took first in the U17 category. Full contest placings are below and THANK YOU to all the girls who skated - without you, this event could not continue to give females a chance to build their skills and grow the community of women skaters!

Females of all ages and skill levels ripped it up to the tunes of DJ Cherry Bomb - lots of girls had never been on a board before, and it was awesome to see them improve over the course of the afternoon.

Girls as young as 5 years old skated hard in the sun during the three-hour event, and there were some great prizes handed out at the end thanks to our supportive sponsors. The draw prizes fundraised $135.00 for the Friends of Clayoquot Sound and we received some local press from the Westcoaster - check out the story at:

Girls Skate Day will go off at the Tofino Skatepark on Saturday, June 28th 2008 from Noon-3:00pm .

*Rain Date scheduled for Sunday, June 29th

The park will be open for ALL FEMALES to skateboard during this FREE event.  Girls of all ages and abilities are welcome, even if they have NEVER been on a board before. Talented local skaters from Surf Sister will be ripping it up while DJ Cherry Bomb spins killer tunes, and enter to win awesome DRAW PRIZES with all proceeds going to the Friends of Clayoquot Sound!  

SOME EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED but skaters can bring their own gear - helmets are mandatory. Waivers will be available at sign in on the day of the event.

To celebrate 5 years of hosting Calgary’s ONLY all-female skateboarding event, See Jane Skate is teaming up with Westside Recreation Centre’s Summer Bash to offer the best in skateboarding, music and entertainment for all ages. The competition drew the largest turnout of spectators to date with over 175 attending, and the level of skating from the girls was totally sick!

The event received coverage in Metro magazine as well as The Calgary Sun and the female break dancers in the B-Girls Breakin’ Showcase were awesome as well. One of the highlights was 7-year-old Hailey who entered the competition on her first day ever at a skate park. She won third prize in the U17 category and told us she would be back for next year’s event!

Congratulations to Laura Sliva, who won first place in the 18+ category, and to Tamara Drybrough, a third year veteran to the See Jane Skate competition who took first place in the U17 category.

I want to thank all the girls who came out to support, without you this event could not happen and I hope See Jane Skate gave you the chance you deserve to show your killer skills! Hope to see you all again at next year’s event!

Thanks to all our generous sponsors, spectators, friends, family and especially thanks to all the female competitors who came out to rip it up at this year’s event the 2006 See Jane Skate girls skate comp was a huge success!

We had 11 girls competing, plus the addition of 6 wicked B-Girls who battled it out in a breakin’ showcase. Congrats to Tenia LaSaga on winning the Under-17 division and to Laura Silva for killing the 18+ category. Slam City Jam was a sponsor this year and part of first prize was a chance to compete in the Girls Open heat at Slam - Tenia gave a huge effort and got a chance to skate with some of her favorite pro skaters! “Slam was a blast, I met all the people that I wanted to  - it was mind blowing, I’ll never forget it ever!” Tenia wrote after Slam.
